Germ Theory and Its Contested Credit

Germ theory did not arrive as one clean discovery with one clean discoverer. This trail follows the theory from Pasteur and Koch's rival proofs, through Lister's antiseptic surgery, to the disease it first helped explain, and ends on the twentieth century antibiotic that cured that disease, whose own discovery credit was disputed and settled only by a lawsuit.

Pasteur's experiments disproved the old idea that life could arise spontaneously and showed that specific microbes cause specific fermentations and diseases, putting germ theory on experimental footing for the first time. This trail follows the theory he helped found and the credit that followed it.

Koch reached the same conclusion as Pasteur by an independent and more rigorous path, isolating a microbe, growing it in pure culture and reintroducing it to confirm the disease, a method later called Koch's postulates. Historians record real rivalry between the two men alongside genuine scientific complementarity.

Discoveries

The atlas credits germ theory jointly to Pasteur and Koch rather than to one discoverer, and even the founding year is disputed, between Pasteur's 1861 spontaneous generation experiments and Koch's 1876 to 1884 work on anthrax, tuberculosis and cholera. It is the hinge this trail turns on.

This is the general class of disease germ theory explained, from a localized wound infection to systemic sepsis. The atlas keeps it separate from named diseases like tuberculosis, since those have their own distinct histories and treatments worth recording on their own.

Lister took germ theory out of the laboratory and into the operating room, using carbolic acid to kill microorganisms on wounds, dressings and instruments. His 1867 paper reported sharply reduced mortality on his Glasgow surgical wards, though surgeons who saw no visible cause for infection resisted the idea for nearly two decades.

Treatments

Antisepsis is the practice Lister's 1867 paper described, and the atlas records both its slow, resisted adoption across Europe and North America and the specific claim it makes, preventing a bacterial infection before it starts rather than treating one already underway.

Conditions

Robert Koch identified the tuberculosis bacillus in 1882, the discovery that helped establish germ theory on solid ground, though the disease itself had been described far earlier, including by Hippocrates. Effective antibiotic treatment for it did not exist until streptomycin arrived in the 1940s.

Discoveries

Streptomycin became the first antibiotic able to cure tuberculosis, isolated on 19 October 1943 in a Rutgers University laboratory. The atlas records who actually performed that isolation and who received the Nobel Prize for it as two different questions with two different answers.

Waksman directed the Rutgers laboratory where streptomycin was isolated and alone received the 1952 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery. He was later accused of playing down the graduate student who had performed the isolating work under his supervision.

Schatz was the PhD student who actually isolated streptomycin in Waksman's laboratory in 1943. Left out of the Nobel recognition, he sued and won a 1950 settlement recognizing him as legal co-discoverer, a dispute the atlas records as still unsettled in how most textbooks tell the story.
