Elizabeth Blackwell

Elizabeth Blackwell was an English-born physician who on January 23, 1849 became the first woman to earn a medical degree in the United States, graduating from Geneva Medical College in New York after every other school she applied to had refused her. In 1857 she and her sister Emily, also a physician, joined with Marie Zakrzewska to found the New York Infirmary for Indigent Women and Children, a hospital staffed entirely by women, and in 1868 the infirmary opened an associated medical college to train women physicians; after returning to Britain she helped open the London School of Medicine for Women in 1874.
