English physician best known for characterizing Bright's disease (chronic nephritis, now understood to encompass nephrotic syndrome) in his 1827 Reports of Medical Cases. He practiced at Guy's Hospital, London, where his systematic clinicopathological correlations between symptoms, autopsy findings and urine analysis helped found the modern study of kidney disease.
