Willem Einthoven was a Dutch physiologist who invented the string galvanometer, a highly sensitive instrument capable of recording the heart's electrical activity, and used it between 1901 and 1903 to develop clinical electrocardiography (ECG), including the standard labeling of the waveform's P, Q, R, S and T deflections still used today. He received the 1924 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery.
