Mayo Clinic is a nonprofit academic medical center that grew from a single physician's practice into one of the largest group medical practices in the world. William Worrall Mayo opened a private practice in Rochester, Minnesota on January 27, 1864; his sons William James and Charles Horace Mayo joined after completing medical school, and following the devastating 1883 Rochester tornado the Mayo physicians partnered with the Sisters of Saint Francis, who funded and staffed a hospital, to open Saint Mary's Hospital on September 30, 1889, the direct institutional ancestor of the modern clinic. The practice moved toward multi-specialty group medicine in the 1890s, a model widely copied elsewhere. This atlas records what the historical record supports and is not medical advice.
