The primary biomedical and public-health research agency of the United States federal government, headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland. Its origins trace to 1887, when a one-room Hygienic Laboratory was created within the Marine Hospital Service on Staten Island, New York; the laboratory moved to Washington, D.C. in 1891 and was formally established as the National Institute of Health by the 1930 Ransdell Act. It later grew into a multi-institute agency, pluralized as the National Institutes of Health, and today comprises 27 separate institutes and centers, the world's largest public funder of biomedical research.
