Origin Pathological anatomy from Morgagni's 1761 De Sedibus et Causis Morborum; cellular pathology from Virchow's 1858 Die Cellularpathologie; the College of American Pathologists was founded in Chicago on 12 to 13 December 1946.
The specialty concerned with the study of disease through examination of tissues, cells and body fluids, forming the diagnostic basis for most of modern medicine. The discipline has two foundational milestones: the establishment of pathological anatomy, correlating symptoms in life with findings at autopsy, by Giovanni Battista Morgagni in 1761, and the establishment of cellular pathology, disease understood at the level of the cell, by Rudolf Virchow in 1858. In the United States pathology was recognized as the practice of medicine by the American Medical Association around 1943, and pathologists organized their own professional body in 1946.
