Origin The 1950s
Pulmonology is the medical specialty that deals with diseases involving the respiratory tract, the lungs, airways and chest. Pulmonologists are trained specifically in diseases and conditions of the chest, most centrally pneumonia, asthma, tuberculosis, emphysema and complicated chest infections, and the specialty overlaps closely with critical care medicine in the management of patients on mechanical ventilation.
