The specialty that uses imaging technologies, principally X-rays and later magnetic resonance and other modalities, to diagnose and treat disease. The field began the moment Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen discovered X-rays in November 1895, an event that within months led to X-ray machines being used clinically worldwide. It organized professionally in the United States in the 1920s and expanded dramatically in the later twentieth century with computed tomography, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging.
