A 2020 historiographical review (Leffler et al., Annals of Translational Medicine) treats this as genuinely unsettled rather than merely repeated: Indian tradition and some historians credit the physician Sushruta with an earlier description, but the composition date of the Sushruta Samhita cannot be fixed with certainty, so the review concludes it is impossible to say which nation, or which individual, first performed a cataract operation.
