Lucio Bini was an Italian psychiatrist who, working with his supervisor Ugo Cerletti at Sapienza University of Rome, co-developed electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and designed the apparatus used to deliver it. On 11 April 1938 the two administered the first electrically induced convulsive treatment to a human patient, developed to replace earlier convulsive therapies induced by injected drugs, which were harder to control and time precisely. Bini is regarded as the treatment's technical and physiological architect.
